Shortage of Skilled Tradespeople Creates Problems

A recently released government report shows that construction and building work in New Zealand will experience unprecedented growth over the next five years. This is due to the building boom throughout the country but especially in Auckland and Christchurch where a massive increase in residential construction is expected . Some people are concerned that standards may be compromised by the increased building activity. 

One of the greatest concerns is the risk that the skill gap could be filled with offshore workers who did not meet New Zealand standards. The Certified Builders Association believes there is a need to strengthen the Licensed Building Practitioners certification to prevent that happening.

Homeowners are reminded that certain restricted building work must be carried out by a New Zealand licensed builder. Home owners are advised to check for builders certification before employing a builder.
